On 9 October 1933, the Chinese Red Army counterattacked Xiaoshi, a strategic township near Lichuan County, recently seized by the Nationalist Army during its encirclement campaign against the Chinese Soviet Republic in Jiangxi. The Communists suffered heavy casualties and failed.
