On 9 October 1952, around midnight, a police car carrying 16 officers on patrol crashed down roughly 100 metres of steps on Pottinger Street near Hong Kong Central Police Station. It struck 20-year-old Miss Lau before stopping at Wellington Street. Nine officers were injured, including one seriously.
