On 9 October 1985, four Palestinian terrorists who hijacked the cruise ship Achille Lauro off Egypt and killed Jewish-American passenger Leon Klinghoffer surrendered after two days of negotiations. Their demands to free Palestinian prisoners and redirect the ship to Syria were denied, but they were granted safe passage to Tunisia.
