On October 1, 1970, at noon, retired policeman Chan Gun-yuen went to the parking lot at the H & S Building on Leighton Road to pick up his car. He found that his car door had been opened and his lighter was lost. He felt that Fung Pak-hung, wandering around the scene then, was very suspicious; he stepped forward to investigate, and the two sides quarrelled. Fung took out a screwdriver to scare Chan, then turned and ran away. Chan chased him along Russell Street to Sharpe Street East where three plainclothes police officers on duty joined in the catch. When Fung was almost caught, he turned and threatened a detective with the screwdriver. Officer Leung Kam-wah pulled his revolver to warn him to stop but it was ignored. Officer Leung fired and hit him in the left thigh. The suspect suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
