At noon on October 1, 1972, five young men gathered in the west wing of the mezza floor of the Cathay Restaurant at No. 7 Causeway Bay Road. While eating, seven thugs ran in and attacked them with choppers. It happened to be lunchtime, there were many customers, and the situation was chaotic. It was difficult for the young men to escape. Only one was unharmed while the rest were stabbed multiple times, especially 18-year-old Lam Chung, a former restaurant employee, who was stabbed in five places on the head and chest and was the most seriously injured.
