On October 14, 1972, at around 2 pm, gas company staff received a gas leak report and went to Daimaru Department Store in Causeway Bay for inspection. The location was in a storeroom close to Paterson Street. A small fire broke out afterwards, and the gas company staff felt unwell. The police were immediately called, and firefighters arrived at the scene quickly. Wong Pong-wong, a 42-year-old firefighter, was the first to enter the storeroom and tried to stem the leaking gas. Soon after, at 2:40 p.m., a massive explosion ripped off the six-inch-thick wall of the room and through the department store. Wong was killed on the spot by the blast which shattered all the glass in the store and damaged even those opposite Great George Street and Paterson Street. The road was covered with glass shards. More than 200 people were injured in the explosion, and Wong Wai-shao, a 30-year-old department store cashier also died after being sent to the hospital.
