Japan demilitarized after World War II and it was not until 1954 that the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF) were formed. Mr. Ishizawa’s father caught a rare moment with his camera of soldiers training on a riverbank in Niigata Prefecture. The soldier carrying the national flag was a senior private and had never thought of becoming a soldier. In 1950 there was a recruitment drive for the National Police Reserve. At that time the lowest ranked policeman earned almost 50% more than that of the average labourer. He had immediately applied and was admitted. In the beginning he thought the job was to enforce law and order. Then the Korean War began and he was now afraid that they might be sent to fight. But it was a well-paid job and he had renewed his commission several times, and had seen the force transform firstly into the National Safety Forces and then the JGSDF.
戰後日本解除武裝，自衛隊要到 1954 年才成立，石沢先生的父親偶然在新潟縣的河 岸拍到他們訓練。拿著國旗的是士長，他本來沒想過當兵，1950 年警察預備隊招募 隊員，收入差不多是一般工作的一倍半，他毫不猶豫便報名並獲取錄。最初他以為只 是做些維持治安的工作，但韓戰爆發，有些人說他們也要上戰場，這曾經讓他很困擾。 然而因為收入高，他已續任了幾次，警備隊亦經過了由保安隊到現在的自衛隊的轉型。

戦後、日本は非武装国家となった。それから間もなく 1954 年に自衛隊は設立され た。石沢さんの父は、新潟県のある川岸で彼らが訓練を行っている珍しい場面を撮 影した。国旗を担いでいるのはひとりの上等兵である。しかし彼は兵隊になろうと は思ってもいなかった。1950 年のこと、警察予備隊の求人募集があった。そこで は一番低い階級の警察官でさえ平均収入の 1.5 倍だった。すぐさま彼はそれに応募 して、採用された。働き始めたころ、法と秩序を維持するのが自分の仕事なのだと 彼は考えていた。間もなく朝鮮戦争が起こったときには、いつか自分たちも戦闘に 参加することになるのではないかと彼は不安になったものだった。しかし警察予備 隊の待遇はたしかに恵まれており、彼は何度か昇進することにもなった。その間に、 1952 年には保安隊へと名を変え、1954 年に自衛隊として組織化された。
